TON was a gothic/doom metal band that formed in Brooklyn 1989. Throughout their career they released 7 studio albums.In 1993, one of their most famous albums (Bloody Kisses) became the first album on their label (Roadrunner records) to reach certified gold status.
Afterwards in 1996 they released October rust although it didn't quite reach the same success as BK it it still managed to debut at no42 on the billboard US 200.
one of the defining features of Type O negative as a band was their dark and sarcastic sense of humour. This is especially presented in song titles such as Eveeryone I love is dead or black no.1 (little miss scare all) actually being a pun on hair dye (clairol is a pun on scare all and black no.1 being the shade). And the song my Girfriends Girlfriend.
TON also used a wide range of influences. They were heavily influenced by metal bands such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, but also goth bands such as The cure and shoegaze bands like My Bloody Valentine. Surprisingly, they were also influenced by the Beatles and their stage name the "drab four" is also a pun on the beatles the "fab four".
Sadly, the band ended when singer/frontman Peter Steele died from Sepsis in 2010, and the band have officially said they would not reform the band with a new singer. Interestingly, Josh Silver (the backing vocalist and keyboardist) now works as a paramedic. They other members of the band still work in music and are in a band called Eye Am with members of the sludge metal band crowbar.
